An energised industry
EFFORTS to tackle climate change include heavy investment in renewable sources of electricity around the world. Solar power saw the biggest leap in 2010, with the installed base jumping 70% compared with 2009 to 40 gigawatts. Wind power also grew strongly, adding 24% of generating capacity. Yet the biggest source of renewable electricity, hydropower, and the smallest, geothermal, both only added 3% to capacity. Finding usable sources of either is becoming increasingly hard or costly. The region that saw the biggest growth in renewable energy projects was power-hungry Asia. Investment in renewables also saw the biggest leap since 2007, with $243 billion spent, a 30% increase over 2009.

EU officials test hydrogen fuel cell car
Hyundai’s prototype ix35 fuel cell electric vehicle has been selected to give Members of the European Parliament and EU officials a taste of the future for hydrogen-powered cars and prove the real-world possibilities of the technology.
The decision moves Hyundai a step closer to the commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles by 2015.
Korean car maker is targeting a price of around US$50,000 (£31,625) by the time the ix35 FCEV goes into commercial production by 2015. This early prototype’s 144 litres hydrogen fuel tank could cost as little as $30 (£19) to fill, giving an estimated cost per mile of around 5p.

Green Gets Technical
Learn how companies are competing in providing oil purification technology for major manufacturers or recycling the rare-earth elements from old consumer electronic products. Others are adapting fiber-optic technology to make 3-D solar panels.
On the consumer side, automakers such as Ford Motor and Honda are offering more and more electric and hybrid vehicles, while Coca-Cola and DuPont are using bioplastic bottles now on supermarket shelves.
